This past week I got to photograph a family portrait session with some sweet neighbors of mine, up on a hilltop overlooking the rolling hills and mountains of the Northeast Kingdom. The foliage was doing exactly what fall foliage does best — gold, red, and green stretching out for miles, with that soft golden hour light settling in just as we started shooting. Because these are neighbors and not strangers, the whole session felt easy: kids ran ahead and circled back, parents laughed instead of posed, and some of my favorite frames ended up being the quiet in-between moments rather than the "everyone smile" shots.

Fall in New England doesn't stick around long, which is part of what makes sessions like this one so worth doing — a family exactly as they are this year, framed by a season that will look a little different next time it comes around.
